4 Ways to Prepare for Spring Semester

By Ian Acosta on January 7, 2017

As winter break starts to wind down, it is time to start packing up and heading off from home back to the dorm, apartment, house, etc. For some, this may be the last time they head off to school as they start their final semester.

No matter the case, there is somewhat of an adjustment period to transition from the mindset of being at home to getting back into the more serious, stringent mindset that school demands. What are some ways to prepare for this adjustment phase and to get back into the swing of things?

Here are some ways to prepare for your spring semester to make it as great as possible.

1. Supplies

First, make a checklist or tally of any supplies that might need to be replenished. This tip can be implemented in one of two ways. One way is to make an inventory before leaving for break. However, let’s be honest, most just pack their stuff and want to get home as quick as possible after just having finals.

So, for most, inventory will have to be done as soon as possible when getting back. Go through all your cabinets, rooms, bathrooms, closets, etc. and write down what you need to stock back up on. Get those rolls of toilet paper, groceries, pens, pencils, and bath salts, before your schedule is too hectic again!

2. Books

Books and supplies mostly go along the same lines but books are important enough to be considered their own category. Most schools, if not all, require students to register for classes before leaving for winter break so that professors and lecturers can formally finalize the class roster over the break.

To that point, professors usually provide the syllabus in order to let students prepare for class over break. While on break, take advantage of the opportunity to read the syllabus of the courses you are taking or similar past syllabi to buy the correct textbooks before everyone else does. I am sure most have experienced the hectic atmosphere of a campus bookstore the first week of class. Avoid the stress and headache (and most importantly, the lines) by purchasing books before the semester starts.

3. Organization

After getting settled in, take some time to reorganize the living room, kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom. A new look for a new semester will give a reenergized feel and create some positive energy heading into spring semester. Think about some different floor plans to open up the living room more to create some more space.

Buy some containers to store clothes, supplies, and other items in your room to make more room. Buy a tiered towel rack to store towels, cloths, bathroom supplies and other stuff to make a cramped bathroom feel a little more open. No matter what you do, changing something as simple as a layout can really change the dynamic of a room and the atmosphere of where you live.

4. Schedules

The best way to prepare for anything? Plan it out. When creating a plan for the upcoming spring semester, take note of important dates and mark them on your calendar. Very important dates (obviously) are quiz dates, exam dates, final dates, spring break and any other project or important assignment dates. For a weekly basis, take some time on the weekend to look to see what the week ahead holds. Jot down assignment dates, quiz dates, any club or organization meetings, and anything deemed important.

To really stay on top of time, create an at home schedule as well. By that I mean, plan out grocery trips, living room cleaning and bathroom cleaning as well as any other tasks you found yourself doing week to week in the fall. By creating a schedule and sticking to it, it will help create a daily, weekly, and monthly routine that will be both easy to stick to and make the spring semester fly by.

Spring semester is right around the corner. Hopefully your time off from school allowed for some relaxing and rejuvenating before getting back into the constant struggle of studying and working every day. Spring semester was always my favorite semester personally because the weather started to get warmer, baseball season started again, and the time to summer became ever closer. Whatever your reasons may be, use those as motivation. That way, not only will it make completing your spring semester that much more enjoyable, but it will also provide added incentive to do your best throughout the semester. Stay focused and study hard and the rest will come. Have a great semester!
